Our office is within 25 miles of the cities of Raleigh, Durham, Research Triangle Park, and Chapel Hill. The city of Charlotte, NC is 100 miles from our office.

The area is served by the Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), with daily commuter flights to cities in the eastern corridor and direct flights to London.

At our initial consultation, we listen to you tell us what you want for your user interface. We learn your objectives for the software, any current user interface issues that need to be addressed, and your project constraints. Then we define the user information that needs to be gathered. Complex software projects such as specialized, multifeatured client/server or web applications usually require 3-5 days of consultation. Less complex projects, such as ebusiness websites and intranets, require 1-3 days.

After our consultation, we give you a plan for implementing our user interface design lifecycle, complete with milestones and deliverables. The project timeline below shows how we can map our lifecycle to your software development lifecycle. I'm Carla Merrill, the owner of Focused Design and principal design consultant.
I've been working with software development teams for over 10 years.
At Focused Design, we are experts at gathering the critical information about your target users, and then translating that knowledge into a user interface that works.

Experience
Our design and analysis work has involved both large and small scale software projects, covering a wide range of technical areas and platforms. We understand how to work within the software development lifecycle and deliver on schedule.

Our experience includes designing and managing the intranet for a division of a major communications company, analyzing the UI design of the intranet for a major pharmaceutical firm, leading the UI design team for web-based network testing software at a major network test device company, and designing the UI for a suite of application launching software. (See our Samples web page for more information.) For large projects, we can work with your design team or provide an experienced team of UI and graphics designers to support your project.

Tools and technical skills
Dreamweaver UltraDev is our primary UI prototyping tool. We also have design experience with JBuilder, javascript, and XML. For storyboards and graphics prototypes, we use Fireworks and Paint Shop Pro. Web backend experience includes configuration of IIS and WebSphere Application Server.
